Rules
The board is 4×4. Arrow keys (or a swipe on the phone) push every tile in one direction; adjacent equal tiles merge and the merged value is added to your score. Each tile merges at most once per move. The goal is a 2048 tile, after which you may keep going.
Strategy
Anchor the big tile in a corner and use three directions, pressing the fourth only when forced. Keeping rows full stops the corner tile from being dislodged. "Undo" takes back one move for the careless moments.
Keyboard and touch
Arrow keys or WASD on desktop; swipe on the board on a phone. Page scrolling is disabled over the board.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play 2048?
Slide the board in one of four directions; every tile moves that way and two equal tiles that touch merge into their sum. After each move a 2 (rarely a 4) appears in an empty cell. Build the 2048 tile to win; the game ends when no move is left.
Is there a strategy for 2048?
Keep your biggest tile in a corner and avoid the direction that pulls it away. Arrange tiles in a descending 'snake' so the second-largest is always next to the largest.
Is my game saved?
Yes. The board and best score are stored in this browser, so you continue where you left off after closing the page.
Can I keep playing after 2048?
Yes. After winning, press 'Keep going' and aim for 4096 and beyond.
